Making the Everyday Interesting

Making the Everyday Interesting

During a quick visit to Chapel Hill last week, I found myself in the whole foods ladies room looking at the wall tile. Most of the time I let things like this wash on by without a moments thought, but this time I was struck by how well the designer had used stock sizes of a very simple wall tile to make up a new pattern: a little subway, a little square, a little different all together. An excellent example of the final product surpassing the usual implementation…

That said, this weekend I had the chance to be in another rest room, this time in the historic Hill House in Morehead Hill.  The building itself is an amazing 1920s mansion that rambles over many thousands of square feet, full of lovely finishes and some pretty stunning spaces.  Contemplating the small bath off of the family’s breakfast room, I had two simultaneous thoughts: “whoa, the wallpaper is overkill” and “they just don’t make subway tile like that anymore.” Let us count the ways: subtle crackle generated over time, completely flat tiles, darkened grout, great corner pieces and cap… I take it back, somebody probably does make tile like this, but I’m sure it’s a custom, expensive product.  and it’s a shame, because there are many people with historic bathrooms that would love to be able to fix plumbing issues and repair the tile with something like this instead of matching the whole foods bathroom.

Why 4/1?

Why 4/1?

What does 4/1 mean?

The shorthand way to describe a double-hung window is by the number of lights in each sash, either spelled out: four-over-one, or written simply with numbers: 4/1.  From the common one-over-one to a Colonial’s six-over-six, from an Italianate’s two-over-two to a Bungalow’s three-over-one, each form is tied to an era or style of house and helps an architectural historian identify when a structure was built.

Trinity Design/Build – by permission

I’ve always been partial to windows in general – original windows on an old house are crucial to the character of the building.  I often speak about the importance, value, and durability of old windows and why they should never be replaced, so it seemed natural to honor them in my company name.  4/1 windows particularly, with four vertical lights on the top sash, are distinctive to bungalows around Durham, NC.  They have a lovely proportion and balance with the thin panes above the single wide one below.

Any time you want me to pull out my old window soapbox, just say the word.  I’ve got a great vantage point from up there, and am always happy to lecture.

To What Ends?

To What Ends?

I’m debating exactly what purpose this opening page will have.  Maintenance of a full-blown, daily blog is out of the realm of possibility at the moment, and I don’t want it to look like I’ve forgotten about the site if nothing changes every three days.  Instead, I believe I’ll use it to write about big changes, new projects, major stages, and final conclusions.  The momentous and significant only.

That means something important had best happen soon!

Urban Avenue

Urban Avenue

I’m about to head over to the project on Urban, where little alterations will hopefully make a big difference on the house. We’re opening up the kitchen by enclosing a too-small screened porch, enlarging the second-floor bathroom, and generally correcting a few issues created by the people who flipped the property last. I can’t wait to see what the demolition has done in the past week or two!

The rear facade will show the most change.
